About 1st Pillar

From the boiler room to the boardroom.

Our mission

Better outcomes for pupils,
made possible by better operations.

Schools deliver education. Operations make that delivery possible. When operations work, pupils benefit. That is the only outcome that matters.

Lived experience

We have run the operations of schools and trusts. We know what the job looks like on a Tuesday in November.

Professional expertise

DfE-accredited School Resource Management Advisers, ISBL Fellows, chartered accountants and estates professionals.

Genuine partnership

We work as trusted colleagues, not visiting consultants, and we stay to embed the improvement, not just recommend it.

Systems that last

Frameworks, templates, and now ORSIA, built so the improvement outlives the engagement and belongs to the trust, not to us.

The team

Built by people who've done the job.

Emma Gray

Founder and CEO, 1st Pillar · Co-founder, ORSIA

School business specialist and executive school leader. Runs the advisory practice, and leads business development, engagement and implementation for ORSIA, the trusts it works with and how it lands in them. Twenty-four years of running the operations of schools and a trust, and of hearing from hundreds of leaders across the sector what the job actually asks of them.

  • 24 years as an executive school leader: school business leadership in secondary schools and at executive level in a cross-phase multi-academy trust
  • DfE-accredited School Resource Management Adviser and Fellow of the Institute of School Business Leadership; MBA (Warwick)
  • DfE trainer on integrated curriculum and financial planning and strategic leadership; national speaker on risk and operational leadership
  • Author of 1st Pillar's article on its Strategy Map framework (2026)
  • Shaped ORSIA's coverage, proposition and fit — what the platform has to answer, what it offers a trust, and whether it works the way a trust actually runs

Paul Gray

Co-founder, ORSIA · Strategy, Finance and Product

Chartered accountant, finance and strategy leader. Leads strategy, finance and product development for 1st Pillar, and designed and led the development of ORSIA, its architecture, its data model and the business logic that turns a trust's data into one picture. Twenty-five years of hearing about the sector's challenges over dinner, and a career alongside major consulting firms, now brought to bear on solving them.

  • FCCA; 25 years as a senior finance executive across global businesses, from regulated financial services to B2B/B2G SaaS software
  • Group Finance Director at a multi-tenancy SaaS scale-up, building financial management, board reporting and SaaS metrics from the ground up across UK and North American operations, with runway, unit economics and investor-ready modelling
  • Senior finance roles at Lloyd’s of London, Zurich Financial Services, Friends Provident International and The Openwork Partnership, across insurance, wealth and asset management
  • Years working alongside major consulting firms on strategy and transformation programmes, which shaped how ORSIA connects strategy to delivery, risk and assurance rather than treating them as separate disciplines
  • Designed and led the development of ORSIA — its information architecture, data model, role-based access model, ingestion layer, business logic and reporting engine — and leads its product development

We bring in the right people for the work, and only those people.

From advisers to platform

Why we built ORSIA.

After two decades of watching trusts answer the same six questions in six different places, strategy here, the improvement plan there, the budget in a workbook, risk in a spreadsheet, safeguarding and compliance evidence in folders, governance in a pack put together the week before, we built the platform we wanted ourselves. One model where the answers meet, designed around how a MAT genuinely runs, by people who have run schools and trusts, and who support them now.

The ideaYour systems keep the records. ORSIA connects what they hold into one picture.

Your MIS, ledger and HR system stay as they are. ORSIA reads from them and connects what they cannot.

The promiseEverything links.

A risk to its control, its action and its evidence, an action to the plan it serves, a plan to the outcome it exists for, up to one live picture the board and every school can read.

Work with us

No open roles today. Always interested in the right people.

1st Pillar is small by design. We are not recruiting right now, but as the work grows so will the team, and we would rather know about good people before we need them than after.

Sector specialists

School business leaders, finance directors, estates and HR professionals, and leaders in inclusion, SEND and safeguarding, who have done the job and want to help others do it well, as an associate or in time as part of the team.

Technical specialists

Engineers, data and integration specialists, and product and design people who want to take ORSIA further with us, and who care that it is used well in real trusts.

If that sounds like you, send us a few lines about yourself and what you do. We read every one and keep in touch.

Start the conversation

Talk to us about ORSIA, advisory support, or where to start.

Whether you want to understand the platform, discuss a specific challenge or explore how 1st Pillar could support your trust or school, we'd be glad to talk.
